Conclusion Of Horror Trailers
Conclusion of horror trailers
After analysing different horror trailers, I had decided
that with the resources provided to us, psychological thriller would be the
most effective in the case of portraying typical conventions of horror movies.
Certian conventions that I repeatidly whitnessed with camera angles was the
effort in portraying the antagonist as dominant and the protagonist as weak.
This was done through low and high angles. Another conventional shot was the
close up shot. This was to emphasise the seriousness of the situation that the
protagonist was in.
Intertitles in horror trailers mainly consist of as little
writing as possible, due to the trailer and the movie are able to keep the
suspense going and at the same time attract the viewers in more whilst the
other Intertitles provide additional information based on the movie which is
essential for the potential audience to know.
The pace of the trailer tends to be slow and calm at the
beginning, however, as the plot unravels, the pace increases along with it,
thus increasing tension and suspense which will excite the viewer and may
persuade them to see the movie.
These trailers tend to have common music as background
music, however, when placed into a horror situation, the music adapts and
creates an effect that the audience will not feel comfortable with which is
exactly the reaction that the film production companys want. However, not all
trailers consist of music. Teaser trailers may not have music due to the teaser
trailer mainly provides the public with necessary information and a small clip
of what is to be expected. Lastly, lighting has a major impact of the outcome
of the trailer due to it sets the mood and scenery of what the movie is going
to be based on throughout.
Viral Marketing
Viral marketing is a method used to draw in the attention
of the audience. Viral marketing and various other modes such as viral advertising refer
to market techniques that use methods such as social networks like “FACEBOOK”
to increase popularity and reputation in the promotion. Viral marketing is the
most conventionally used method and is mainly handled by the public therefore the
attention of a trailer is spread through a high majority in a small amount of
time through social networking, word of mouth, and any other sense of
communication. Viral marketing also has modes of marketing through subliminally
marketing the audience without them realising, and this is called stealth
marketing. In conclusion, viral marketing is an effective method to popularise
information and attract a wide range of audiences, this is because it is a
cheap way as the company relies mainly on the audience to spread the
information for example: a certain trailer such as “Despicable Me” where
everyone received a clip of it on their phones, the internet where they
forwarded to family and friends, spreading the information to a wider
audience.
Definitions
Definitions of common media text:
Target audience – These are the people who are mainly going
to be promoted and accommodated to. This is because they are most likely to
enjoy what the movie has to offer and will find more pleasure in watching it.
Dialogue – This is the text in which someone has to read out
in order to create a scene within the movie.
Special effects – These are illusions that are created and
put into the movie to make it more exciting or realistic. This will only
improve the movie and expand on its target audience.
Credits/Intertitles – These are added peices of information
usually at the end of the trailer to provide the viewer with more knowledge on
the upcoming movie.
Pace – This is the speed of each clip or scene within the
movie.
Unique selling point – This is what is special about the
movie and how it differs from others in the same genre. By having a unique
selling point, it can advertise this and show what it has to offer compared to
all other movies, however, this will limit them to a smaller targeted audience.
Narrative – The structure of the plot of the trailer
Introduction for A2 project
Introduction for A2 project
For my A2 media coursework, I will be creating a promotional
package for a new film that my group and I will be attempting to create. This includes
a teaser trailer on our own “movie”, poster and a magazine front cover all based
on our teaser trailer. There are various aspects to consider when making a
trailer for a trailer. For example, a suitable genre needs to be decided and
the genre we are attempting is horror. This is because it allows my group and I
to challenge our creative nature but at the same time there are many typical conventions
that can easily be applied whilst creating our very own trailer. Another
advantage of horror is that it can have many sub genres easily linked to it.
Due to this, I am able to broaden the typical conventions and individualise
them by merging them with my own ideas. However, before attempting this, I will
prioritise myself to do primary research into horror trailers and watching
movies representing exactly what I am attempting to prevail. This is because
for me to have more first hand knowledge and understanding of what makes a
horror film thrive, for example, I will be able to use more typical conventions
in my work which will help portray a professional final product. To create my
own trailer, we will be put into groups and thus the work begins into preparing
the trailer, for example, we will have to create a storyboard and prepare
everything before we start to film. Most importantly, certain aspects that many
of the public don’t see as important such as names, mise-en-scene, lighting
will have to undergo various market research methods such as questionnaires to
help give us an idea of what the public can relate to more and this will allow
our promotional package to become more popular.
